29. BOOK REVIEW- “13 STEPS TO BLOODY GOOD LUCK”

The book “13 STEPS TO BLOODY GOOD LUCK” is written by Ashwin Sanghi. Ashwin Sanghi is an entrepreneur by profession and writing is his passion which has evolved into a parallel career. He completed his master's degree in business from the Yale School of Management. Ashwin Sanghi is counted among India’s highest-selling English fiction authors.


In this book the author, Ashwin Sanghi has talked about “Luck”. With the help of entertaining narratives and some personal experiences and depiction, the author gave insights on how people can work towards being lucky.


The author has mentioned in his book that ninety-nine percent of luck is present in our lives, and the remaining one percent is that bloody good luck which is the ability to catch the ninety-nine percent which is already present. The author had talk about luck and opportunity. How the opportunities can turn into good luck or bad luck depending upon their results or outcomes is also explained in the book with the help of various examples.


The author also talks about the three R’s Raise- How can we raise the number of opportunities that come our way?

Recognize- How can we recognize these opportunities better?

Respond- How can we respond to the recognized opportunities?


Ashwin Sanghi also talks about Attitude and Approach, attitude refers to our way of thinking about something or someone. It is also influenced by our past experiences or interactions. Whereas approach refers to a particular way of dealing with a challenge. Everything that makes us lucky or unlucky depends on our attitude and approach.


Author also talks about three types of luck in his book, i.e.

1. Circumstantial Luck- circumstantial luck is all about being at the right place at the right time. When the circumstances or situation make things happen right then this can be said as circumstantial luck.

2. Constitutional Luck- being promoted within a company because you are from the boss’s hometown is constitutional luck.

3. Dumb Luck- This is a kind of luck where cause and effect cannot be analyzed. Finding a thousand rupee note on the road is a dumb luck.


By using the mnemonic ‘Causing Ripple’ the author, Ashwin Sanghi has summarized all the thirteen key attitudes and approaches that attract good luck. According to the author, every lucky person has these traits.


Author talks about confidence, lucky people are confident, they develop confidence in themselves. He talks about alertness, lucky people are always alert, they always find a way a stay alert. He also talks about how unlearning old approaches and ideas help lucky people.

He also mentioned in his book how lucky people make the best out of bad situations. He shared the example of Narendra Modi in his book, that how he made the best out of the situation and became a Prime Minister from a tea-seller.


He explained each and every trait with lots of real-life examples of people like Mahatma Gandhi, Narendra Modi, Jamsetji Tata, etc. The reader can understand all the attitudes and approaches to good luck by reading the book. Each trait is explained by various examples of different personalities and their experiences.

After explaining all the 13 principles to good luck in detail, the author talks about the 14th principle at the end. According to the author, Lucky people are those who are able to see how lucky they are. Realization is the most important step that one needs to take to achieve bloody good luck.
